Where is my compiled class file?
A: If you are sure your class is being compiled, then the class file should be output somewhere! Without any directory argument, your compiler should place the class file in the same directory as your source file. Use the output directory argument to specify where the class files are generated.

Which class should be compiled first?
A: Sometimes you will find that trial and error will give you the answer you need. If you are using the Sun compiler, javac, the compiler will compile any other classes that your target class depends on, provided the other source files are in the same directory hierarchy as the first and the sub-directory names reflect the package hierarchy of the classes.

Designed For A Change Article Published

During the development of a software product we all make numerous design decisions. Some decisions are done in early stages of development, while analyzing the requirements and gathering the overall architecture of the product. Other design decisions are done during the lower-level design. Finally, even during the implementation of the a single component, we are often in position to weight several design options against each other.

In the following discussion we will examine one of the common design aspects, which is the source of numerous design dilemmas: should we design the product such that it will be ready for a future change (in the requirements, in technology etc.), or should we settle for a straight forward implementation? When is our product “sufficiently-designed” and when is it “over-designed”? In other words, how can we find the golden path when it comes to designing a software system to be ready for future changes?

Overview

Web development incorporates all areas of creating a Web site for the World Wide Web. Design Comes in Threes
Though the word design gets used to describe lots of things (visual stylings, system architectures, interactivity, etc.), I’ve always considered it to be three things:
  1. A profession
  2. A problem-solving methodology
  3. Communication
In particular, a lot of recent articles on Functioning Form have focused on the third point –design is communication- especially as it relates to the strategic value of design.
  1. It’s Simple. Design Communicates.
  2. Iterative Holistic Communication
  3. Defining the Problem
So naturally I found it interesting that when was asked to define design in one sentence each of the panelists in Good Design vs. Great Design emphasized communication:
  1. Cameron Moll: Design is about communication but cannot exist without a medium of some sort.
  2. Veerle Pieters: Design is away of communicating emotions. It expresses feelings so its design.
  3. Jon Hicks: Debate how ugly design or no design wins it misses the point that design is about communication.
Also of note was Cameron Moll’s comment that “the feedback I've been privy to seems to indicate the developers enjoyed [the panel], while the designers felt it was a bit too Graphic Design 101.”

On a related (only by threes) note, BJ Fogg pinged me about updating a link to his book on User Experience Comes in Threes. Which made me recall a few Venn diagrams I’ve encountered since the original post.

First up is Diego Rodriguez’s considerations for a great user experience from Design 2.0 in San Francisco:
  1. Desirability (human factors)
  2. Viability (business factors)
  3. Feasibility (technical factors)
Next is Dirk Knemeyer’s anatomy of a product from the Future of Digital Product Design (PDF):
  1. Business
  2. Technology
  3. People
Lastly, to tie it all back to design as communication is my list of three things an interface design should communicate to customers/users:
  1. By addressing the question “What is this?” we communicate usefulness.
  2. By addressing “How do I use it?” we communicate usability.
  3. By addressing “Why should I care?” we communicate desirability.

How do I limit the scope of a file chooser?
A: The general mechanism for limiting file selection is to use a FileFilter. You could write a custom filter that only accepts files in a specified directory for instance. This would not stop users from browsing the file system, but would ensure that no other files could be selected.

Where Visual Design Meets Usability: Part 1
Posting on Functioning Form has been light this week, as I’ve been recovering from a recent illness. Luckily, the great folks at User Interface Engineering (UIE) have posted some of my thoughts on the overlaps between visual design and usability from a recent interview with UIE’s Joshua Porter:

Where Visual Design Meets Usability - An Interview with Luke Wroblewski, Part 1
'Recently, UIE’s Joshua Porter managed to get a little of Luke’s time to answer some questions about the role of design, which we’re publishing in two parts.'

Thanks to Josh for the great questions and to the whole UIE team for inviting me to speak at their User Interface 11 conference this October. In my session, I’ll be diving into how visual design enables appropriate and effective communication with customers, end-users, internal stakeholders, and more.

The Door Post

This post has been a long time coming. Originally it was going to be an entire series of posts (remember when I used to post more than 5 items a month? Good times), going into an inane amount of detail, and featuring case studies on every single aspect of the featured subject.

It is about doors.

You might be thinking that I couldn't possibly be dull enough to fill post upon post with doors. The idea was going to be to examine what is arguably the most common object in everyday human interaction and go into why it is, pardon my French, fucked up so often. I would start with looking at each component (primarily the handle, but any windows play an important part in interaction) and show how they are usually done so badly as to make the primary task of opening a door more difficult for people.

It was to be an opus on how, by paying attention to the task at hand and examining small details, to best design an object. But all you really need to know is this:

Excluding life threatening situations, door design is the single most common bit of bad design. Remember: handles mean pull, panels mean push. Never change this. For large values of never.

Ever have to design a door? Now you know how. Ever need to design a car, pen, website or anything, bear the above lesson in mind.
