Website Testing: Conquering Cross-browser, Cross-platform Woes
As I was doing final cross-browser testing for a redesign of SKDesigns, my website design business, the design implementation was working quite well in nearly every mainstream browser for Windows, Mac, Linux, and even the Lynx text-only browser. Unfortunately, though, I found problems with three old or little used browsers, such as Internet Explorer 5.2 for Mac that destroyed the CSS-positioned layout. I toiled over how to best handle these browser bugs, especially since my upcoming Web design book -- currently in production at my publisher -- stresses the importance of usability, readability, and degrading gracefully for older browsers. Today's post covers part of my decision-making journey and choices of approaches for dealing with these CSS bug-riddled old and little-used browsers. (2731 words, 53 links, 5 images)

Make a start on those 'legacy' pages
Sorry that there has been no accessible web design tips over the last two weeks - I've been off on holiday. This weeks tip is short, not technical, and aimed at organisations who have a huge number of inaccessible 'legacy' web pages. Here is a tip to get started down the road towards making them accessible - without it feeling like it is a frightening and over-whelming task. Prioritize your pages according to their popularity with your visitors, and start by making the most popular pages of your website(s) accessible first. This assumes of course that you have access to visitor statistics for your website - if not - then your first task is to put in place a way to gather statistics for your site(s). Having made a start, you can then plan to ensure that all of your pages are made accessible - including of course - those you are creating today.Register for your weekly accessble web design tip.

The Door Post

This post has been a long time coming. Originally it was going to be an entire series of posts (remember when I used to post more than 5 items a month? Good times), going into an inane amount of detail, and featuring case studies on every single aspect of the featured subject.

It is about doors.

You might be thinking that I couldn't possibly be dull enough to fill post upon post with doors. The idea was going to be to examine what is arguably the most common object in everyday human interaction and go into why it is, pardon my French, fucked up so often. I would start with looking at each component (primarily the handle, but any windows play an important part in interaction) and show how they are usually done so badly as to make the primary task of opening a door more difficult for people.

It was to be an opus on how, by paying attention to the task at hand and examining small details, to best design an object. But all you really need to know is this:

Excluding life threatening situations, door design is the single most common bit of bad design. Remember: handles mean pull, panels mean push. Never change this. For large values of never.

Ever have to design a door? Now you know how. Ever need to design a car, pen, website or anything, bear the above lesson in mind.

This weeks accessible web design tip
Does your website use a table to place the navigation bar on the left hand side, and the main content on the right? If that is how your site is designed, it is no bad thing; visitors will instantly understand this design 'convention' and won't have to waste time trying to figure out how to get around your site. There is however a problem with this 'standard layout' for people using screen readers. Accessing a website using a screen reader is a 'linear process'; the text that comes first, gets read first - and if the navigation is the first thing on the page - that is what gets read. If your navigation bar contains a lot of links, that can mean a lot of wasted time before a person using a screen reader gets to the content of your page.I was recently reminded of a very elegant 'table hack' , while reading, 'Building Accessible Websites' by Joe Clark (http://www.joeclark.org/), that can help users get around this problem. Instead of coding your table in the conventional manner as in the example below:
Navigation menu Page Content
You can use the following rather elegant 'hack' to ensure the content on your page is presented first, and the navigation second:
(put a single pixel gif here) Page Content
The navigation menu goes here.
As you can see it uses a 'empty' table cell in the first row which is directly above the navigation bar, and then the content cell is in the right hand cell (the content cell spans both rows). You might need to study this for a second or two to figure out what is going on, but if my explanation doesn't help, have a look at the following page where it is covered in a little more depth: http://www.apromotionguide.com/tabletrick.htmlRegister for the weekly MCU accessible web design tip.

Designed For A Change Article Published

During the development of a software product we all make numerous design decisions. Some decisions are done in early stages of development, while analyzing the requirements and gathering the overall architecture of the product. Other design decisions are done during the lower-level design. Finally, even during the implementation of the a single component, we are often in position to weight several design options against each other.

In the following discussion we will examine one of the common design aspects, which is the source of numerous design dilemmas: should we design the product such that it will be ready for a future change (in the requirements, in technology etc.), or should we settle for a straight forward implementation? When is our product “sufficiently-designed” and when is it “over-designed”? In other words, how can we find the golden path when it comes to designing a software system to be ready for future changes?

3 tips: free Bobby, free Waizilla, and use Acrobot
I am sorry that I was unable to provide my usual accessible web design tips over the last couple of weeks; I got caught up in a number of projects that kept me very busy. To try to make up for my tardiness, this week I am offering 'three tips for the price of one'.Tip 1.Although Bobby, the web accessibility evaluator, is now a commercial product (and the website version only lets you evaluate a page once a minute), did you know that you can still download a free version of the Bobby evaluator? I recently found a link to the original download on the WATS.ca website, along with a host of other useful accessibility testing tools. Download the free Bobby accessibility tester (requires the Java Runtime Engine which is included in the download).Tip 2.While I am on the subject of web accessibility checkers, you may, or may not, be aware that a free cross-platform website accessibility testing tool called WaiZilla, is currently being developed by Tim Roberts, and a group of other programmers . This is an Open Source project, so not only can you can keep up with developments by regularly visiting the website, if you are interested and have the appropriate talents, you can also contribute to the development process.Tip 3.If you find that marking up all your acronyms has become a bit of a chore, you may be interested in a tool developed by Ian Lloyd on the Accessify website; the Acrobot - Abbreviation and Acronym Generator. This useful tool will find acronyms in your HTML, add the tag, and the appropriate title attribute. There is also a 'favelet' provided on the site to make it even easier to pass text through to Acrobot. The tips archive is at: http://www.mcu.org.uk/weeklytips/

Use HTML attributes, or CSS to set web page colors, but don't use both.
Here is a useful tip that I found while browsing the Accessibility Internet Rally 2003 Advanced Training website. Use HTML attributes, or CSS to set web page colors, but don't use both. For example, if you set the background colour in a table cell to black using an HTML attribute (e.g. bgcolor='#000000'), and used CSS to create contrasting white text (style ='color: #FFFFFF') - you will start getting emails from users who surf with style sheets off (or those using browser that don't support style sheets). I haven't came across anyone yet who can read black text on a black background. The tips archive is at: Weekly accessible Web Design Tips.Register for your weekly accessible web design tip.
